Hard to tell from just a written description, but it sounds like there's a jam of some sort or a fault in one of the parts. Open the printer up and see if anything is stuck in there, like a piece of paper. If not, take it back to where you bought it. Depending on how old it is, it'll be covered by warranty or you'll have to pay.
How long have you had it and is it still under warranty? I purchased an extended warranty on all my desktops, laptops, and printers, (four). They come from Dell, HP and Compaq. Have you tried disconnecting and removing the software and then re-installing the software and then plugging it back in when the software setup programs tells you to?
Before doing all this, set a Restore Point with System Restore. It is always the best practice to set a Restore Point when making ANY changes to a system. That includes installing any software, along with hardware and especially when updating drivers and firmware.
Have you updated drivers recently? If so was it for the printer? If so, try going into Safe Mode and rolling back the driver. This may help clear up your problem. Sometimes new drivers have the oppostie affect we were looking for in an update, and drivers are the major cause of most BSOD. Or Blue Screen Of Death, or Computer Crash. Updating firmware can also cause this.
Have you tried opening up the case and using an air blower to blow out the accumulated dust? Sometimes dust can cause things to just not work the way they should. It is good practice to shoo out dust from inside hardware cases on a monthly basis.
If it is still under warranty, HP should be offering to come pick it up UPS, fix it and send it back on their dime, or come to where it resides, fix it and leave. At the very least they should be using the phone or the their chat technical help to walk you through fixing it.

p.s. buy extended warrantees. They really ARE worth the extra money. I always do. My fiance recently wanted to upgrade his memory in his computer from 512 to 1gig. He called HP and wouldnt' you know it, but his warranty was up just the day before and HP refused to give him the hardware specs on his current memory. He didn't know a computer motherboard configuration has limits on the amount of RAM it can handle and speed, cache, bus and all that good tech stuff, the memory has to be exaxtly the identical type. Not perhaps the brand, but meet all the specs. He put it in, and you would expect if a problem were to occur it would immediantly, right? Nope, nothing went wrong until AFTER he installed a new printer. Then he got the BSOD. So, I used the recovery console to fix the 'problem' after removing the offending 'printer' or so we thought as usually the last thing you did to the system or last thing you added prior to a crash is the culpret. Well, after several more crashes it just refused to boot. So, he went out and bought a new computer. The next day I decided to remove the RAM he had added and replace the old sticks. The machine booted up like nothing had went wrong with it in its entire existance! Now we have an extra computer (home) and we don't need it. So, we are going to use it to play with and see how much we can learn while we change all sorts of stuff. Will be a ton of fun!
Sounds like something may be jammed. That is an older printer.
Don't spend too much getting an estimate or repaired.
Its a great printer but you can get a newer printer or a replacement one Ebay cheaper.
