HP Laserjet 4200 printer - copies now have smudged streak running vertically on the left of page. Help?

This HP printer is a few years old. Very recently, there is a smudged streak, approximately 1'; wide, running vertically through each copy. Can you recommend a fix? Thanks in advance.HP Laserjet 4200 printer - copies now have smudged streak running vertically on the left of page. Help?

Is it a smudge that is solid color. Or is it kind of faded? If it is faded the solution is simple; buy a new ink cartridge. If it is strong color (not faded just smudged) something is smearing it so have someone look at your printer or have it cleaned. If you haven't already just open it up real quick and look along the route the paper follows. Maybe you will be able to see the problem.
