I have an HP PSC 1601 All-in-One Printer-Scanner-Copier... How do I get the scanner to work?

When I press the scan button, it says this:

No Scan Options. You need to install or run device software for feature.

I don't know what it's talking about... We've had this printer forever, but I just discovered it has a scanner... Help me please?I have an HP PSC 1601 All-in-One Printer-Scanner-Copier... How do I get the scanner to work?
Hi There,

When you purchased your all-in-one it came with some ';quick start'; instructions.

Usually the instructions tell you to install the software from the CD BEFORE plugging in the all-in-one.

Doing that installs the printer/scanner drivers for using your device also it will have a photo editor, a scanner program and usually an OCR (optical character recognition) application for converting a scanned image (jpeg) into text which you can edit and save as a document.

If you just plug your all-in-one first Windows will ';detect'; the new hardware and load generic drivers (those are already in windows) which usually work fine for printing but not always for scanning.

You have two options';

Option 1

Click ';Start';

Click ';Control Panel'; then select ';Printers and Other Hardware'; and in the next dialog box select ';Scanners and Cameras';

If you see your scanner listed just click on it and try to set it up by following the directions.

Now your scanner may work using the generic drivers.

Option 2. The best option for your device

Uninstall your printer and reinstall per the ';Quick Start Directions'; that came with your all-in-one.

To uninstall:

Click ';Start';

Click ';Control Panel';

Select ';Printers and Other Hardware';

From this dialog bos select ';View installed printers or fax printers';

That will open up another dialog box and you will see your printer listed.

Just right click on your printer/scanner and select ';Delete';.

(That uninstalls your device)

Now reboot your computer (this step makes the necessary changes to the registry).

Finally install your all-in-one per the directions that came with your device.

It is important to carefull follow installation directions for optimum use of any device.

Hope this helps.

Go to the HP website and download the drivers. I usually try to avoid using the install CD as it tends to install a bunch of useless crap. Once you've installed the drivers, the scanning function should work.
In HP Director there is a scan button to operate the scanner
